Mid-April – the trees are coming into leaf. The brilliant green of new growth catches the light, and there’s some warmth when the sun shines. Can we put winter behind us now? Perhaps a little less rain too? Please!

A day that’s neither warm nor cold. It’s not clear, but neither is it misty. The sun’s there, but it’s not going to shine. A nothing day? Hardly, but I’ve heard such days (perhaps with a spot of drizzle) described as ‘soft’ (it’s most certainly soft away from the road surface….). Yes, a ‘soft day’ could be a good description. It’s certainly pleasant out and about at Shirlett.

A sunny morning, but it will cloud over later – let’s get out now. Don’t need to go far – Benthall Hall car park, around the lanes to Wyke, and return past the Vineyards and briefly onto the Edge.

One of us has been away since before Christmas, and the other has travelled nearly 1,200 miles, by rail and road, in the last three days. It’s good to be home again, refreshing to be back on familiar ground, great to travel at just 3mph…

Noticeably so – I walked this way three weeks ago, when the ground was sodden. Today the footpath across the field was walkable, and had been walked (the footprints were mostly those of deer). Early spring – the air’s cool, the sunshine’s warm – wonderful!

A wander on a warm and fine spring afternoon. Ned’s lane is muddy, as is the lane down past Round Hill, but at least the surfaced road is (mostly) fit to walk on (don’t fall in the potholes!).
From tomorrow, the days will be longer than the nights for the next six months…

There’s no connection! It just happens to be the 17th of March – which means the vernal equinox is only a few days away. It’s a fine spring afternoon, with bright warm sunshine and some heavy cloud, which disperses as the day progresses. It’s very pleasant quiet country, down below the Wenlock Edge.
