Again! It’s a great short walk, perfect for a cold winter afternoon (soon warming up on the plod uphill), with wonderful views across the Severn to the south Shropshire hill country.
I continued along the ridge, descending to Little Hill. There’s virtually no view (unless trees are “view”). Returned to the car along the path through the woods on the north-west side.
A walk at the northern end of the Wenlock Edge, on a cold but sunny January afternoon. The weather forecast for the next few days wasn’t so favourable – better make the most of it…
North of the Severn – a rocky sandstone outcrop, still being worked for its fine pale sandstone. Old workings abound in the woodlands – some deep and dangerous, others open and explorable. The summit is only 192 metres (630′) above sea level, but provides a great viewpoint for the south Shropshire hill country.
Sounds like a foreign land… A walk to the secondary summit (Clee Burf) of Shropshire’s highest hill, Brown Clee, via the hill fort at Nordy Bank. It was a perfect winter afternoon – a clear sky, bright sunshine and no wind – far too good to stay at home.
What a contrast – after yesterday’s stiff breeze, barely a breath of wind today. We left home in sunshine, and arrived in rain – but within minutes, the sun was shining again. Barely high enough to call a hill, the views, especially to the south Shropshire hill country, are tremendous.

First outing of the new year – a walk up the avenue of increasingly battered beeches on Linley Hill, Shropshire, for some fine views and a breath of very fresh air. The forecast, in the fine sunny morning, said there could be a shower over Shropshire in the afternoon. There was.
There’s a need for a leg stretch after Christmas dinner – with the promise of pud to come later. We followed the Water of Leith upstream from the eponymous Stockbridge to Belford Road bridge, then returned via St Mary’s Cathedral and assorted streets, crescents and places to the pud.
Nesscliffe is a well-known landmark on the A5 north of Shrewsbury – but beyond the obvious outcrops, a low rocky ridge stretches out into quiet farmland. Without the tree cover of Nesscliffe Hill, the views are extensive. A most pleasant stroll, ideal for these days when the afternoons are short.
