Our homeward journey will pass within yards of this Wolverhampton manor house – and we haven’t had our lunch yet. Let’s call in, have a bite to eat, and a wander around ‘Wittick’…
There could be a shower this afternoon (there was!) – might be good to be in the woods, for a bit of shelter (it was!). The sun shone as we walked up through Mose (feeling really warm, for the first time this year), but the clouds were gathering when we paused at the chocolate spot (a log beside the pool). Not far back to the start – we only got slightly damp…

It was supposed to be a cloudy afternoon, according to the Met. Office, but the sun was still shining when we left the castle and began to explore the grounds – and it did so for the rest of the afternoon. I’m not complaining…
“Internationally renowned fine artist and textile designer, Kaffe Fassett, is bringing his colourful exhibition to Mid Wales in 2023.” Yes, to Powis Castle, near Welshpool. One of us said she’d like to take a look…
The works are on display here and there throughout the castle, but photography is not generally permitted anywhere inside (it appears that although the National Trust owns the building, the contents still belong to the family). However, in a little room where several quilts are hung, “you can take photos in this room only if you wish”. Thanks – I will…
26 January: after recording Britannia’s eastbound progress near Allscott, we needed lunch and a short leg stretch. Attingham: the Cornish pasties were excellent; the cakes nearly finished us off. A short walk around the park would be good – the first snowdrops are up, and the birds are feeding in the woods. Shame there’s hardly any light…

Hardly – tidal waters are much further down the Severn. However, the local rivers are in flood, and where the Tern flows through Attingham Park, it overspills to form a lake, very scenic in this afternoon’s bright sunshine. The ducks and geese seem to be enjoying it too. We can’t follow our usual route today – part of the estate is closed (did the sign say something about herd management? Expect venison in the shop…), so instead we’re just wandering, with an eye to the sparkling waters of Lake Tern…

It’s another fine, bright and breezy autumn day – warm in the sunshine, cool in the wind. We’re walking through the Dudmaston Hall grounds, out through the fields of the asparagus farm and into Comer Woods. There are lots of cars parked at Dudmaston, but there don’t seem to be many people out and about. Are they all in the tea room? (On this occasion, we’ll never know)
