I originally thought the tower was an unnecessarily lavish adornment by an architect. However I later read that it housed the water tanks needed to operate the hydraulic lifts down to platform level. The ornate brickwork is therefore surprisingly elegant camouflage for a functional tower !

Hadn’t thought of the lifts! I’d assumed it was for ventilation, like the various other towers nearby
