Yes the one on the left is the older one. They began building it in 1970 and it still wasn’t generating power properly when I was there 10-15 year later. The station was essentially finished and we were just constructing ancillary buildings around the site, mainly storage facilities. I couldn’t understand why they (the CEGB) were squeezing in all this extra storage, losing some pleasant lawned areas in the process. However when the miners’ strike started the next year after I had moved on the penny dropped – they had wanted to make the site more self sufficient for longer in case road deliveries of certain items were affected by picketing. Heysham B, run as a completely separate site was at a much earlier stage of construction at the time.
