I have a book which records that Gronwen was a colliery near Trefonen over 3 miles distant. There was a horse drawn plateway/ tramway from this and it’s neighbouring pits in the Morda coalfield to the wharf here. The coal was transported over the tramway before being loaded onto canal boats for carriage further afield.

Apparently the tramway was out of use by 1874 and the cottages in your picture date from after this time.

Charming picture Geoff – have just spotted the dog as well !

    1. That’s right – it was known as the Morda Tramway, I believe. A sign beside the canal said there were still some traces remaining, but what they were and where, it didn’t say. You’d need to be on the other bank of the canal to look more closely at the wharf, and it looks like private land.
